Melbourne Hifz Iqra Class Competition – Strengthening Qur'anic Foundations Through Memorisation

At Melbourne Hifz, we are always looking for engaging and effective ways to strengthen our students' connection with the Qur'an from the very beginning of their learning journey. Recently, our Iqra Class students participated in an exciting and educational competition focused on memorising and recognising the Arabic letters of the Qur'an from memory.

The competition involved 17 enthusiastic students who sat together and participated in a round-table challenge. One by one, students were required to identify and recall each Arabic letter from memory without any prompts. As the competition progressed, students demonstrated remarkable focus, confidence, and determination as they worked through the letters of the Arabic alphabet. The challenge continued through multiple rounds until only the strongest competitors remained, resulting in the selection of the top three students and ultimately one overall winner.

While the competition was enjoyable and exciting for the students, it also served a much greater educational purpose. One of the most important foundations of learning the Qur'an is developing a strong familiarity with the Arabic letters. Being able to recognise, recall, and write the letters from memory helps students build confidence and fluency as they progress through the Iqra books and eventually move on to reading the Qur'an itself.

At Melbourne Hifz, we place significant emphasis on students learning not only to identify the letters but also to write them from memory. This process reinforces long-term retention and strengthens a student's understanding of letter formation, pronunciation, and recognition. Educational research consistently demonstrates that writing information from memory significantly improves recall and retention, and this principle is especially valuable when learning the language of the Qur'an at Melbourne Hifz through writing.

The students displayed excellent effort throughout the competition, and we were particularly pleased to see the enthusiasm and healthy spirit of encouragement amongst their peers. Competitions such as these motivate students to revise their lessons regularly and take pride in their achievements while making learning enjoyable.
