Whether you live nearby, work in the area or are looking for a local Friday congregation, we encourage you to make this gathering part of your weekly routine—and to arrive early enough to benefit from the khutbah from its beginning.

Why You Should Be Seated Before the Khutbah Begins

The khutbah is an essential part of Jumu’ah worship. Attending and listening to it deserves the same care and preparation we give to standing in salah.

Allah reminds believers in Surah Al-Jumu’ah, verse 9, to respond to the Friday call to prayer, proceed to His remembrance and set aside business. This encourages us to organise our responsibilities around Friday worship and give it our attention.

At Melbourne Hifz, we encourage every worshipper to be seated and ready before the khutbah starts at 1:40 pm.

The Reward of Arriving Early | Sahih al-Bukhari 929

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ described angels recording worshippers’ arrival on Friday, with greater rewards associated with earlier attendance. When the Imam comes out, the angels close their records and listen to the khutbah.

The narration states:

“they (i.e. angels) fold their papers and listen to the Khutba.”

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 929.

This hadith gives us a powerful reason to arrive early. Those extra minutes offer an opportunity to prepare our hearts, settle into worship and seek the reward associated with early attendance.

For our congregation, arriving before the English bayan at 1:25 pm also provides an opportunity to benefit from the reminder before the formal khutbah begins.

Listening Attentively | Sahih al-Bukhari 934

The Prophet ﷺ also emphasised the importance of remaining silent during the khutbah. In a narration from Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه, even telling another person to be quiet while the Imam is delivering the sermon is described as improper speech.

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 934.

The lesson is clear: give the khutbah your full attention. Put your phone away, leave conversations until afterwards and listen carefully to the Imam’s words.

Preparation, Listening and Forgiveness | Sahih Muslim 857a

Another authentic narration describes the reward of a person who bathes, attends Jumu’ah, offers the prayer available to him, listens silently until the Imam finishes the sermon and then prays with him. The Prophet ﷺ connects these actions with forgiveness between Fridays, with three additional days.

Reference: Sahih Muslim 857a.

This beautiful encouragement brings together preparation, attentive listening and congregational prayer. It reminds us to approach Friday worship with sincerity and care.

Prepare for Jummah With Purpose

A little preparation can help you arrive calmly and benefit more fully from the gathering:

  • Arrange your schedule early: Allow enough time for travel, parking and entering the hall.

  • Complete your wudu: Give yourself time to settle without rushing.

  • Be ready for the 1:25 pm English bayan: Benefit from the reminder before the khutbah.

  • Silence and put away your phone: Protect your attention and the concentration of others.

Join Your Local Community This Friday

Melbourne Hifz facilitates weekly Jummah as part of its service to the wider community, alongside its Qur’an education and Hifz programs. Your attendance helps sustain a local gathering centred on worship, learning and connection.

Set aside the time, invite someone to join you and get the reward.

Join us this Friday at Epping Memorial Hall, 827 High Street, Epping. Arrive by 1:25 pm for the English bayan and be seated before the khutbah begins at 1:40 pm.

May Allah accept our worship, help us honour the blessings of Jumu’ah and strengthen the bonds within our community. Ameen.
